The Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine is dedicated to training the next generation of infectious disease specialists. Fellows are involved in the direct management of numerous infectious disease syndromes; these include complex bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, HIV, hepatitis B and C, sexually transmitted infections, travel medicine, transplant care, complex bone and joint infections, infection control and prevention, as well as antimicrobial stewardship. This exposure ensures that fellows gain comprehensive knowledge and practical skills essential for their future careers as infectious disease specialists 1.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Infectious Disease Fellowship is meticulously designed to integrate clinical practice with research training. Each fellow is given dedicated time for research where they are expected to complete and present scholarly projects. Application Process

Interested candidates must apply through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and utilize the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are required to submit several documents, including:

• Medical school transcript.
• Transcripts for United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 (or equivalent COMLEX).
• Three letters of recommendation, including one from the residency program director in internal medicine.
• Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) status report, if applicable.
• A personal statement.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must complete an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program or an equivalent by July 1 of the fellowship start date 2.

Competitiveness and Visa Sponsorship

The fellowship program is competitive, with only two first-year positions available annually. International medical graduates are welcome to apply, provided they have completed an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency and have met the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) board eligibility requirements. The program offers support for J-1 visa sponsorship, facilitating the application process for qualified international candidates.
