University of Missouri-Columbia Program

The University of Missouri-Columbia Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program aims to produce highly skilled orthopaedic surgeons who serve as role models for their communities and patients. The five-year program emphasizes didactic education, small-group case discussions, and a focus on current literature. Residents are encouraged to engage in research and are required to complete at least one research project before graduation.

Application to the program is done through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) in the fall. Required application components include a completed ERAS application form, medical school transcript, USMLE Step 1 scores, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The program anticipates offering two interview days in mid-December and early January, with limited availability for a second look after interviews.

Throughout the program, residents are exposed to a wide range of orthopaedic specialties and are expected to be fully trained and competent in all aspects of orthopaedics. The curriculum includes rotations in various subspecialties, hands-on cadaveric training, and opportunities for residents to engage in national and regional leadership activities.

The program encourages residents to participate in research and present at national meetings. Senior residents in the Chief year take on supervisory roles and serve as mentors to junior team members. Additionally, residents are required to attend specific courses and conferences during different stages of the program to enhance their education.
