Residents receive training in various settings, including primary care, community outreach, emergency department, normal newborn nursery, NICU, pediatric inpatient service, PICU, and subspecialty electives.
The teaching program emphasizes developing excellence as a primary care provider for community-based practice or subspecialty fellowship training. Residents have opportunities for small group teaching, case-oriented discussions, didactic lectures, individual reading, morning report, bedside teaching on rounds, and problem rounds discussing unique cases. Residents are given progressive autonomy under faculty supervision and are encouraged to participate in basic and clinical research projects. Residents have access to educational resources such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) PREP® Curriculum, AAP Pedialink, MedStudy® Pediatric Board Review Course, Yale Primary Pediatric Curriculum®, and PedsRAP® podcast. The duty hours for residents comply with ACGME requirements and are in line with the Department of Pediatrics Graduate Medical Education Residency Teaching Policies and Procedures.
Overall, the USC/LA General Pediatric Residency Program provides a comprehensive training experience focused on producing well-rounded pediatricians who are competitive in the job market and for fellowship positions.
