Residents will gain exposure to a wide variety of pathological cases, exemplifying the program's commitment to providing hands-on learning opportunities across multiple settings. The residents complete both elective and mandatory rotations at additional prestigious locations, including Cedars Sinai, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and the UCLA main campus at Westwood. Importantly, a one-month required rotation occurs at the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office, enhancing forensic training.

Research Opportunities

The program promotes scholarly activity, inviting residents to contribute to interdepartmental teaching programs and engage in research initiatives. Residents regularly have the opportunity to publish case studies, enhancing their academic profiles.

Unique Aspects of the Program

The residency program emphasizes a collaborative and supportive training environment fostered by a diversity of backgrounds among both faculty and residents. Interactive AP microscopic teaching conferences occur multiple times per week, paired with weekly autopsy review conferences. Prospective residents must submit a range of application materials through the ERAS service, including a personal statement, curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, and transcripts.

Specific eligibility requirements mandate that applicants' education does not belong to the most recent cohort, which ensures a robust selection of candidates who have had relevant experiences before application. Additionally, applicants are expected to hold a valid ECFMG certificate to be considered.

Residents of the Harbor-UCLA Pathology program enjoy a vibrant life in Torrance, CA, benefiting from a collegial atmosphere that extends beyond the professional realm. Residents have shared positive experiences regarding the supportive nature of faculty relationships and a strong sense of camaraderie within the resident cohort.

Application Timeline

The program has a defined timeline for applications, accepting materials until December 1 for senior residents starting on July 1 of the next year. Virtual interviews for applicants commence in October and continue into January. This lead time provides candidates with ample opportunity to present their qualifications for consideration.
