The mission focuses on disease prevention and the healing of current maladies, suited particularly for those aspiring to pursue a career in full-service family medicine in a rural setting 1.

Program Highlights

The Family Medicine program in Athens has been accredited since 2020 and builds on a rich legacy of full-scope family medicine. It provides residents with unopposed training in multiple specialties, including inpatient, critical care, labor and delivery, and emergency medicine at UT Health Athens Hospital, which serves Henderson County and nearby cities. Residents benefit from one-on-one surgical obstetrics training by fellowship-trained family medicine OB physicians, participating in over 700 deliveries annually. With a total of 18 residents, the program ensures personalized mentorship from core faculty and community physicians 1.

Residents are provided with unparalleled community integration opportunities, allowing them to learn from and work with underserved populations, partnering with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and private practices such as East Texas Community Clinic and Lakeland Medical Associates. The residency is designed to combine high-quality training activities paired with geographical proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, all accompanied by a competitive salary and benefits package 1.

Curriculum and Rotations

Residents participate in 13 four-week rotations each year. The curriculum reflects the realities encountered by family physicians, which often includes patients presenting with multiple health issues. The program offers various elective opportunities, such as elective rotations in ENT, ophthalmology, urology, hematology-oncology, psychology, pulmonary medicine, nephrology, podiatry, wound care, and sleep medicine. Furthermore, additional out-of-town electives can be arranged to meet individual training needs 4.

Application Requirements

For applicants considering the Family Medicine residency, certain eligibility criteria must be met. Applicants must be graduates of an LCME or AOA accredited medical school and have passed the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2. The application process requires a Dean's letter, three letters of recommendation (ideally from faculty with clinical experience), as well as a curriculum vitae and personal statement. In addition, applicants should have graduated from medical school within the last three years 2.

The program accepts only six residents each year, aiming for a full complement of 18 residents total. While International Medical Graduates (IMGs) may apply, the program currently prioritizes US- and Canadian-accredited allopathic and osteopathic medical school graduates 6.

Competitiveness and Visa Support

The Family Medicine residency program is considered competitive, attracting strong applicants focused on rural healthcare and full-scope family medicine. Although primarily tailored toward graduates from US and Canadian medical schools, the program may review applications from international graduates depending on specific circumstances.
