Overview

Overview of the Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship Program

The Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship Program at the University of Utah Health is a three-year program designed for individuals who aspire to become laboratory directors or co-directors specializing in clinical cytogenetics and clinical molecular genetics. The training provided is comprehensive and integrates critical aspects of sample preparation, analysis, and reporting of various sample types, focusing primarily on the detection and interpretation of chromosomal abnormalities and the testing for mutations in human disease.

1

Fellows participate extensively in clinical test validations and are involved in the ongoing development and enhancement of new assays. This exposure is enriched by the use of both traditional methodologies and advanced, cutting-edge technologies, enabling fellows to gain a thorough understanding of current laboratory practices.

1

The fellowship includes didactic lectures, hands-on rotations through other relevant laboratories, and active participation in both biochemical and medical genetics clinics. This multifaceted approach helps develop fellows' clinical acumen while also fostering research skills.

1

Training and Research Opportunities

Throughout the fellowship, fellows have the opportunity to pursue a research project, drawing from the ongoing research and development activities within the laboratories. These projects are usually translational, which allows fellows to engage in collaborations with various divisions, including Medical Genetics, Pathology, and ARUP Laboratories. This element of the program is crucial for those looking to publish their work or present at scientific conferences.

1

Fellows also take responsibility for monthly presentations, enhancing their teaching skills and facilitating the sharing of case studies among peers. Additionally, there may be opportunities to assume administrative and management roles within the laboratory, supported by formal training designed to prepare fellows for future leadership roles.

1

Training Sites

The fellowship experience is enriched by diverse clinical settings. Fellows will gain experience at several prestigious locations, including:

  • Primary Children's Eccles Outpatient Services
  • University of Utah Hospital
  • ARUP Laboratories
  • Huntsman Cancer Institute

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship, candidates must possess an M.D. or Ph.D. in genetics, molecular biology, or a related field. For international applicants, if the degree is obtained outside of the United States or Canada, it must be reviewed by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) Credentials Committee prior to entrance into the program.

1

The primary visa supported for international trainees is the J-1 visa, which aligns with the policies set forth by the University of Utah Office of Graduate Medical Education. This policy applies to all Department of Pathology fellowships.

1

Applications for the fellowship are due by September 15, 2024, for positions starting in July 2025. Specific application materials and more details can be found in the program documentation.
