UPMC Medical Education Program

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh offers a specialized Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship that is designed to provide a comprehensive training experience for the next generation of pediatric rheumatologists. This three-year fellowship is accredited by ACGME and is a prominent part of the mission within the Department of Pediatrics.

Curriculum Overview

Research Opportunities

Pediatric Rheumatology fellows have access to substantial research training supported by the division’s affiliation with the NIH. The research initiatives primarily focus on immunomodulation of T-cell function in autoimmunity, along with the development of innovative gene transfer strategies aimed at delivering biologic drugs to affected joints. Additionally, investigations into pediatric rheumatic diseases utilize advanced techniques such as DNA microarrays and proteomics to unravel the genetic underpinnings of conditions like juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA).

Clinical research continues to explore the safety and effectiveness of emerging therapies for disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, and scleroderma, providing fellows with the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge studies.

Application Process

The Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship program participates in the NRMP Match. Applicants are invited to submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Programs may set specific criteria for applicants, such as a particular year of graduation or maximum failed USMLE exams.
