STEP 200 Visa J1

The UPMC Vascular Surgery integrated 0-5 residency program is a five-year training paradigm approved by the ACGME. It aims to produce well-rounded vascular specialists with expertise in clinical and academic vascular care. The program includes two mandatory years of research under a T32 training grant, focusing on basic science, biomechanical engineering, or clinical research, with the possibility of obtaining an MSc degree in clinical research.

Residents in the integrated program start with two years of core surgical training, followed by three years dedicated exclusively to vascular surgery. They are exposed to a wide variety of open and endovascular cases across several hospitals within the UPMC system. The residents have a rich operative experience, performing over 300 cases per year. Moreover, residents are actively involved in pre- and post-operative patient care and surgical procedures, under the supervision of attending vascular surgeons.

The program emphasizes research, and residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects, with opportunities to present their work at regional and national meetings. Additionally, there are weekly academic conferences, basic and clinical research conferences, morbidity & mortality reviews, and journal clubs to supplement the educational experience.

Application to the program requires submission through ERAS, with deadlines of October 31 for the five-year residency and December 31 for the two-year fellowship. The application should include standard components like the ERAS application, personal statement, curriculum vitae, official medical school transcript, dean's letter, letters of recommendation, and USMLE Board scores.

For international medical graduates, a current and valid ECFMG certificate is required, as well as passing scores on USMLE Steps I and II, and a current and valid English qualifying exam. The preferred visa for training in the program is the J-1 visa.

The program offers benefits such as a competitive salary, health, dental, and life insurances, vacation time, financial support for scientific meetings, and more. Residents are also supported in presenting their research at conferences and advancing their careers in vascular surgery.
