The UPMC Medical Education Program offers a comprehensive Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program that provides residents with a diverse clinical experience at multiple hospitals within the UPMC network. Residents rotate through flagship institutions such as UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital, UPMC-Shadyside Hospital, UPMC-Magee Women's Hospital, UPMC-Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Veterans' Affairs Hospital.

The program curriculum is designed to comply with the requirements of UPMC Graduate Medical Education, the national ACGME, and the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Residents benefit from a high caseload and a diverse patient mix, allowing them to easily meet all ACGME requirements. The program has a strong focus on multi-disciplinary training, with residents spending time rotating with other medical and surgical services during their third year.

Residents in the Diagnostic Radiology Program have the opportunity to participate in a range of unique experiences, including didactic courses in MR Physics, peer-to-peer teaching opportunities, and elective rotations in various subspecialties of radiology. The program also supports concentrated training in "mini-fellowships" and offers popular electives such as Abdominal Intervention, 3D printing, Informatics, International away electives, and a Community elective to help residents make informed career decisions.

The program has a strong tradition of producing competitive applicants who have consistently excelled in examinations such as the ABR Core and Certifying Examinations and the ACR In-Service Examination. Nearly all residents go on to pursue subspecialty fellowship training following residency, with many residents securing positions in top-tier institutions across the country.

Residents in the DR program receive a competitive salary and benefits package, a generous educational fund, and have the opportunity to participate in moonlighting opportunities. The program's location in Pittsburgh, consistently rated as one of the most livable cities in the country, offers residents a diverse range of cultural, entertainment, dining, outdoor, and athletic experiences.

The program accepts residency applications for R1 (PGY-2) positions through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). Additional information can be found on the program's website under the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section.
