Baylor College of Medicine Program

The Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine is a one-year ACGME-accredited program under the Department of Pathology & Immunology. This fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training in the principles and practices of Blood Banking, Transfusion Medicine, and Coagulation. The primary goal of the program is to prepare fellows to become expert consultants with proficiency in laboratory and clinical management related to Blood Banking and related fields.

The program accepts two fellows each year, offering a core curriculum that encompasses training in blood banking, apheresis, clinical coagulation, and laboratory management. This is undertaken through extensive rotations at major clinical sites which include Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, along with additional experiences at Ben Taub County Hospital, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, and Houston Methodist Hospital 1.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum includes formal training aimed at helping fellows review, interpret, and sign out blood bank reports, which includes managing complex serological workups and transfusion reactions. Important aspects of the training enable fellows to incorporate molecular data and work directly with patients in transfusion-related clinical scenarios, including severe allergic reactions and high-risk pregnancies 3.

Fellows gain hands-on experience in apheresis procedures, which comprise stem cell collection, photopheresis, leukopheresis, and exchange transfusion in both adult and pediatric settings 3. Clinical Rotations

Clinical training is divided among several institutions, with Texas Children's Hospital providing around 4-5 months of exposure. This facility is a Level 1 trauma center with specialized programs, including a robust coagulation laboratory 3. Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center also accounts for 4-5 months of training, recognized for its leadership in various medical fields, including an active apheresis service.

Other significant rotations include Houston Methodist Hospital for one month, and Ben Taub Hospital and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, each providing further specialized experience in 2 weeks 3.

Research Opportunities

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must be eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology or be board-certified in primary specialties such as Hematology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, or Anesthesiology 2.
