University of Louisville School of Medicine Program

The Marie M. Keeling Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at the University of Louisville is an ACGME-accredited program designed to provide an in-depth training experience in transfusion medicine across various clinical settings. This one-year fellowship integrates both academic institutions and community hospitals along with the operations of a regional blood center, offering a comprehensive perspective in the field.

Throughout the program, fellows will engage in hands-on training at the UofL Health hospital system, which includes leading facilities such as Norton Children’s Hospital. This hospital is notable for being a full-service pediatric center with 300 beds, catering to a diverse patient population requiring complex medical care.

The training is structured to encompass adult and pediatric transfusion medicine, covering critical aspects such as cardiopulmonary surgery, solid organ, and bone marrow transplantation, as well as trauma interventions in both adult and pediatric patients. Furthermore, the fellowship includes a component at the American Red Cross Blood Services, where fellows will receive robust training in the collection of whole blood and apheresis, component manufacturing techniques, compliance and regulatory oversight, and complex immunohematology casework. This varied exposure guarantees that fellows will develop advanced expertise necessary for medical director roles in community blood centers or hospital transfusion services.
