Cleveland Clinic Foundation Program

Cleveland Clinic's Fellowship in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine (BB/TM) prepares fellows with comprehensive training for independent practice in clinical settings like academic medical centers, community hospitals, blood banks, or blood centers. This fellowship provides a robust educational experience through its principal training site, the Section of Transfusion Medicine, which issues around 42,000 units of red blood cells (RBCs) annually and performs a variety of immunohematology tests.

The curriculum includes hands-on experience in both clinical and laboratory settings, giving fellows the opportunity to act as educational resources for rotating residents and trainees. Critical clinical roles are part of daily operations, including consultations with clinical colleagues. Additionally, fellows are trained in therapeutic apheresis at the Taussig Cancer Institute, where approximately 2,400 procedures occur each year, covering stem cell collections and immune cell collections. Specialized training also concentrates on coagulation testing through the Section of Hemostasis and Thrombosis and on histocompatibility testing at Allogen Laboratories, a certified laboratory aligned with Cleveland Clinic.

Research and teaching are integral parts of the fellowship, allowing fellows to immerse themselves in unique scientific inquiry while contributing to the education of colleagues within the institution. The American Red Cross’s Northern Ohio Region (ARC-NOR) partners to offer valuable experience in blood center and donor management, further expanding fellow exposure to the complexities of blood banking.

Eligibility Requirements

The program has specific eligibility criteria that fellowship applicants should meet, which include current eligibility for certification by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. This requirement usually means being board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) or Clinical Pathology (CP). Alternatively, applicants may qualify with certification from other American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) boards such as Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Surgery.
