Baylor University Medical Center Program

The Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to provide comprehensive training in cutaneous surgical oncology and reconstruction. This program is recognized as one of the country's highest-volume referral centers for Mohs micrographic surgery, dermatologic surgery, and reconstructive procedures, catering to a diverse patient population in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is designed to enhance knowledge and proficiency in several key areas:

Cutaenous Oncologic Surgery

The training includes comprehensive instruction on medical, surgical, and dermatopathological aspects of cutaneous neoplasms, with a particular emphasis on Mohs micrographic surgery. Fellows gain experience treating a high volume of high-risk tumors and learning when a multidisciplinary approach is necessary for effective patient care.

Cutaenous Reconstructive Surgery

Fellows are trained to perform complex reconstructions following the surgical removal of tumors. This includes knowledge on cutaneous anatomy, wound healing, and advanced techniques in reconstruction.

Cutaenous Cosmetic Surgery

Training extends to cosmetic procedures aimed at improving the skin's appearance and managing cutaneous disorders. Fellows acquire skills in dermatological cosmetic treatments, including minimally invasive procedures.

Scholarly Activity

The program encourages participation in research and scholarly activities, providing mentorship opportunities for fellows to engage in projects that contribute to the medical field. Fellows are expected to submit scholarly work for presentation at conferences and for publication.

Clinical Experience

The fellowship offers substantial clinical experience, with the program director performing over 3,400 Mohs surgeries last year. This provides fellows with significant exposure to a variety of complex cases and the latest advancements in treatments.

Cosmetic training is comprehensive, including procedures such as:

• Injectable fillers
• Neurotoxins
• Ablative and non-ablative lasers
• Chemical peels
• Sclerotherapy
• Hair-loss therapy

Fellows will also participate in clinical trials and have access to a supportive research environment leading to an average of 25 peer-reviewed publications annually.

Training Sites

The training takes place at Baylor University Medical Center, a major teaching hospital recognized for its extensive residency programs and affiliations with the Texas A&M College of Medicine. The facility is well-equipped for both outpatient and inpatient care, providing a comprehensive platform for hands-on learning.

Application Requirements

Applicants must have completed at least three years of residency in Dermatology. Required materials include:

• Personal statement
• Curriculum vitae (CV)
• A minimum of three letters of recommendation
• ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
• USMLE and/or COMLEX scores

It is essential for applicants to adhere to the established requirements for submission through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by the specified deadline.
