The curriculum includes academic and practicum phases done concurrently, aiming to develop skills to improve preventive and chronic care services with a focus on reducing health disparities.

The program emphasizes an ethic of service, patient dignity, human diversity, and human rights. Trainees benefit from diverse training experiences through partnerships between Stroger Hospital, Northwestern Medicine, other academic institutions on Chicago's west side Medical Center campus, and public health agencies in the Chicago metropolitan area.

The program's educational objectives include developing clinical skills for preventive medicine, planning population-based initiatives, and enhancing critical assessment and communication skills. The curriculum is tailored to individual resident goals and interests with a focus on evidence-based, population-focused medicine.

Applicants must have an MD or DO degree from an ACGME accredited institution. Completion of an ACGME accredited residency program in a primary care specialty is preferred. Physicians interested in public health who have completed a PGY-1 year and Step III of the USMLE by the time of entry into the program can also be considered.

The program accepts and trains two residents each year and requires residents to spend 24 months in the full-time program. Application documentation must show completion of a clinical PGY-1 year in an ACGME accredited program before starting the Preventive Medicine program.
