Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University Program

The Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University Emergency Medicine Residency program, housed in a dynamic and high-volume emergency department environment, is designed to provide comprehensive and advanced training in emergency medicine. Renowned for being the seventh oldest EM residency in the nation and located at one of the busiest single-site ED systems, the program offers a unique blend of historical significance and modern, cutting-edge medical education.

Structured in a PGY 1-3 format, the residency accepts ten residents annually, providing a closely knit and supportive educational atmosphere. Residents benefit from training at two primary locations: Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital, a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, ensuring exposure to a broad spectrum of emergency situations.

Under the leadership of Program Director Dr. Jason P. Seamon, DO, MHS, FACEP, the program prides itself on its responsive adaptation to the evolving landscape of emergency medicine, incorporation of diverse teaching methods, and promotion of a robust, interactive academic curriculum complemented by simulation activities. This environment fosters the development of both foundational knowledge and critical procedural skills necessary for success in emergency medicine.

The program also features exceptional ultrasound training and a medical toxicology rotation, setting it apart from others and equipping residents with specialized skills that enhance their clinical competencies.

Application to the program requires submission through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by November 1, including a dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, medical school transcript, and USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Step 1 scores. A USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Step 2 score is preferred but not mandated as part of the initial application package.
