The Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University General Surgery Residency is a five-year program designed to offer early operative experience with progressive responsibility in various areas of general surgery, including endoscopy, critical care, and trauma. This program provides extensive training in endocrine, oncologic, and vascular surgery, with additional opportunities in colorectal, thoracic, and pediatric surgical sub-specialties.

The residency program focuses on resident education over service needs, ensuring a balanced experience that emphasizes resident development. Residents undergo review of their performance and overall educational experience regularly to ensure exceptional training outcomes. Graduating residents typically complete around 1,100 cases, with 300 cases performed during their chief surgical resident year.

The program accepts seven categorical residents annually through the National Resident Matching Program, with one resident having the option to pursue a research year after successful completion of their PGY-2 year. Residents also have the opportunity to choose a surgical critical care fellowship after completing their PGY-3 year.

Corewell Health – Grand Rapids/Michigan State University General Surgery Residency has a strong emphasis on educational excellence, research, and innovation. Residents are required to submit two scholarly/research projects during their training. With high pass rates on board examinations and dedicated faculty support, residents benefit from a robust academic curriculum and research-focused environment.

Application requirements include a deadline of November 30, minimum USMLE scores of Step 1=240 and Step 2=250 (both scores must be submitted), and three letters of recommendation. The interview season typically runs from November to January, and applicants must have U.S. work authorization or be eligible for J-1 status.

The program offers diverse exposure through rotations at institutions like Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, and more. Residents also engage in simulation activities, skills labs, and various didactic sessions to enhance their training experience. Residents are encouraged to reach out to the program coordinators for additional information or to inquire about visiting student opportunities.
