The Thoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University is a six-year program that was approved by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery in 2010. The program aims to train excellent cardiac and thoracic surgeons by providing intensive experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery along with rotations in general surgery and related disciplines.

Throughout the first three years, residents receive core surgery training including rotations in trauma surgery, vascular surgery, minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, and other specialties. In addition, residents will spend significant time in general thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery. The final three years focus on rotations in thoracic surgery, cardiac surgery, and congenital heart surgery, preparing residents for independent practice.

Residents participate in various didactic sessions, mentoring with thoracic faculty, and clinical research projects. There are extensive opportunities for hands-on experience in different types of surgeries and patient care scenarios. Residents also have rotations in the cardiac cath lab, gaining experience in advanced procedures. The program emphasizes a rigorous curriculum to ensure comprehensive training in both cardiac and thoracic surgery.

The program requires all applications to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by the application deadline of October 30, 2022. The application must include the ERAS application, three letters of recommendation, personal statement, USMLE transcript, medical school transcript, and medical school performance evaluation. Applicants are evaluated holistically without specific minimum score requirements. Interviews are by invitation only, and this year's interview date is set for Friday, January 6, 2023, conducted virtually.

For International Medical Graduates, no previous U.S. clinical experience is required. The preferred visa for training at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University is the J-1 visa sponsored through the ECFMG for residency/fellowship training. Applicants should be ECFMG-certified by the application deadline. Residents are provided with a well-rounded experience and exposure to various aspects of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery through a structured curriculum and diverse clinical opportunities.
