The Thoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, which is part of the Feinberg School of Medicine, is a six-year program designed to produce excellent cardiac and thoracic surgeons. The program combines intensive experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery with rotations in general surgery and related disciplines.
In the first three years, residents gain core surgery experience through rotations in trauma surgery, vascular surgery, minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, surgical intensive care, and other general surgery specialties. Additionally, residents spend time in general thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery. The final three years focus on thoracic surgery, cardiac surgery, and congenital heart surgery rotations, providing graduated responsibility and preparation for independent practice.
The program includes extensive multidisciplinary collaboration with the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and other specialties, such as Pulmonary Medicine and Gastroenterology Esophageal Motility Disorders Center. Residents engage in clinical research projects and participate in weekly didactic sessions and conferences covering a range of thoracic and cardiac topics.
For the application process, applicants must submit materials through ERAS, including three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, USMLE and medical school transcripts, and other required documents. The application deadline is October 30, with interviews scheduled for January 6, 2023, and all interviews conducted virtually. International Medical Graduates are encouraged to apply, and the preferred visa for training at McGaw Medical Center is the J-1 visa sponsored through ECFMG. Applicants should be ECFMG-certified by the application deadline.
