Residency Advisor

Duke University Medical Center offers a one-year ACGME accredited Dermatopathology Fellowship. This program is designed to provide both theoretical and practical educational experiences to individuals with a background in pathology or dermatology. The structure of the training depends on whether the trainee has completed a pathology residency or a dermatology residency.

For trainees who have completed a pathology residency, the first eight months consist of 50% training in clinical dermatology and 50% in dermatopathology, followed by four months dedicated entirely to dermatopathology training. Conversely, trainees coming from a dermatology background will spend the first eight months split evenly between anatomic/surgical pathology and dermatopathology, with the remaining four months focused on dermatopathology. The fellowship includes access to a diverse range of clinical cases, including neoplastic and non-neoplastic cutaneous disorders, ensuring a comprehensive exposure to various conditions.

The training encompasses a wide array of advanced diagnostic techniques, which include histochemical and immunohistochemical special staining, electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and molecular pathology. As part of their education, fellows gain graduated responsibility in the sign-out of cases, actively participating in teaching sessions for both pathology and dermatology residents.

Research is a key component of the program, where fellows are encouraged to select areas of interest for clinical or basic research projects. The mission of the Duke Dermatopathology Fellowship Program emphasizes education, research, and the provision of innovative care to patients in various settings.

Program's Aims

The program focuses on delivering advanced dermatopathology education and preparing fellows for lifelong learning and career paths as leaders, practitioners, and researchers. Fellows are trained to deliver accurate diagnoses by understanding dermatologic and pathologic correlations and communicating effectively with clinical teams to enhance patient care.
