Eastern Virginia Medical School Program

The Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency program at Eastern Virginia Medical School offers a comprehensive training experience in open and endovascular approaches at various hospital sites including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, and Sentara Leigh Hospital. Trainees will work with full-time and community faculty across these sites, gaining extensive exposure in procedures over the five-year training period.

The application process for the program involves submitting materials through ERAS, including a Dean's letter, transcripts, three letters of recommendation, USLME Step 1 score, and a personal statement. International applicants are required to have J-1 visas and previous U.S. clinical experience to be considered.

The curriculum encompasses 21 months of core surgical rotations followed by 39 months of vascular-focused services. Residents will develop competencies in non-invasive vascular diagnosis, endovascular procedures, open vascular surgery, vascular patient management, and more, exceeding the procedural count requirements set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The program aims to prepare residents for board certification from the American Board of Surgery (ABS-VS) and the American Board of Osteopathic Surgery (ABOS-VS).

For the 2023-2024 academic year, the interview process involves in-person one-on-one interviews with faculty members, including the Program Director. Interview dates are set for December 15, 2023, and January 19, 2024, with additional opportunities to meet current trainees informally at a reception the evening before each interview day.

The program conducts various conferences, including Grand Rounds, Multidisciplinary Tumor Board, Mortality and Morbidity conferences, and more, to enhance resident education. Additionally, training includes attendance at Vascular Division-sponsored conferences while on vascular rotations to deepen understanding of various vascular topics and patient care.

Residents in the program participate in a structured curriculum that prepares them to function independently and make appropriate clinical decisions while collaborating effectively with colleagues. The program emphasizes lifelong learning, ethical judgment, and cost-effective patient care as essential skills for future vascular surgeons.
