The Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Internal Medicine Residency program offers residents the opportunity to pursue fellowship training or prepare for practice in general or hospitalist medicine in a tight-knit community. Residents train in diverse settings, including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Sentara Ambulatory Care Clinic. The program also takes place at EVMS Hofheimer Hall, where residents participate in clinics and Grand Rounds.

Application to the EVMS Internal Medicine program is done through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), with an application deadline of November 1st for the upcoming Match season. The program offers three tracks for applicants: Medicine-Preliminary, Internal Medicine Categorical, and Internal Medicine/Geriatrics Categorical. It requires 3 letters of recommendation, a Dean's letter, and average Step I USMLE score for the current intern class is 229.

USMLE/COMLEX scores must have all steps passed on the first attempt, and scores must be reported to the program by January 31st. The program does not specify a particular score cutoff but reviews applications holistically. Interviews are conducted from November to January, with around 6 interviews per day and 150-160 interviews per year.

The program accepts International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with highly qualified criteria, including US clinical experience and a graduation within 5 years. EVMS sponsors J-1 Visas and reviews all IMG applications, irrespective of ECFMG/Visa status.

EVMS Internal Medicine residents go through a comprehensive rotation schedule at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and other locations. Daily responsibilities are not affected by the ongoing integration discussions with Old Dominion University.

Overall, the EVMS Internal Medicine Residency program offers a supportive and enriching environment for residents to develop their skills and prepare for successful careers in internal medicine.
