Transitional Year Program Overview

The Transitional Year Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) represents a significant stepping stone for newly graduated physicians in the Navy Medical Corps. This residency program is designed to facilitate the transition from medical school to the role of a practicing physician or medical officer. Graduates emerge well-prepared for either further specialty training or to serve as Operational Medical Officers across various military capacities, including flight surgery, undersea medicine, and shipboard roles.

Approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the program is structured over one year and welcomes a total resident complement of 25. Notably, there are no categorical years in specialty required prior to entering this Transitional Year Residency.

Curriculum and Rotation Structure

The Transitional Year consists of a meticulously outlined curriculum including various clinical rotations. Interns will engage in 13 four-week blocks, receiving training at key institutions that include Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and Maryview Medical Center. Each of these rotations incorporates dedicated academic sessions and operational medicine experiences, which are crucial for the development of a well-rounded military physician.

Rotation Details

Rotations cover a range of specialties. For example, the intern experiences rotations in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, and Psychiatry among others. They may also participate in operational medicine, gaining hands-on experience aboard naval vessels or with Marine units, which is unique to military training programs.

Research and Scholarly Development

Research participation is encouraged although not mandated. Residents may serve as research coordinators to foster involvement in various ongoing projects across departments. Opportunities exist for completion of a research elective if a well-developed project plan is proposed.

Teaching and Mentoring

Teaching is a significant component of the program where residents enhance their instructional skills through presentations during Thursday academic sessions. Each resident is required to deliver at least two lectures throughout the year and participate in peer education with medical students on rotation.

Well-Being and Community Support

The program prioritizes resident well-being by organizing fall and spring retreats aimed at assessing feedback and addressing any concerns. These retreats incorporate both professional development and team-building activities.

Visa Support and Eligibility

This residency program is able to sponsor certain visa types for international medical graduates, ensuring that qualified candidates have the opportunity to apply. Specific details regarding eligibility based on year of graduation and exam performance (for instance, limitations on failed STEP exams) are noteworthy for interested applicants. The program values diversity, including applicants from DO backgrounds and international medical graduates.

Application Process

Applicants interested in the program must express a strong preference for the Transitional Year Internship as their primary choice for PGY-1 training. While interviews are encouraged, they are mandatory only for those applicants designating the program as their first choice. Opportunities for interviews exist for those considering the program as a backup option.

The primary training site is the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, complemented by affiliated facilities including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Maryview Medical Center, each providing diverse clinical settings and learning opportunities. These sites allow for a variety of patient exposure and interdisciplinary collaboration which enrich the training experience.
