Transitional Year Program Overview
The Transitional Year Program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) represents a significant stepping stone for newly graduated physicians in the Navy Medical Corps. 1Curriculum and Rotation Structure
The Transitional Year consists of a meticulously outlined curriculum including various clinical rotations. Interns will engage in 13 four-week blocks, receiving training at key institutions that include Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and Maryview Medical Center. 1Rotation Details

Research participation is encouraged although not mandated. Residents may serve as research coordinators to foster involvement in various ongoing projects across departments. Opportunities exist for completion of a research elective if a well-developed project plan is proposed.

Teaching is a significant component of the program where residents enhance their instructional skills through presentations during Thursday academic sessions. Each resident is required to deliver at least two lectures throughout the year and participate in peer education with medical students on rotation.
