The East Carolina University/ECU Health Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program has been training highly competent emergency physicians for over 30 years. Their Emergency Department has a substantial annual census, serving a large population from eastern North Carolina and surrounding counties. Features of the facility include a main ED with 58 beds, a 16-bed Pediatric ED, a busy PCI center, a Level I trauma center, and a designated Stroke Center.

In their clinical curriculum, residents have 4-week blocks for rotations throughout the three years of residency. There is a structured curriculum to build a solid foundation in Emergency Medicine, with an emphasis on progressively broadening responsibilities and management skills as residents advance through the program. The program includes a comprehensive reading plan covering major textbooks over three years and offers a variety of didactic conferences and activities.

The program provides a robust Ultrasound Experience curriculum tailored to meet ACEP's ultrasound guidelines. Residents receive training in twelve core POCUS applications and participate in bedside scanning with ultrasound-fellowship trained faculty, lectures, procedural training, and supervised image acquisition sessions.

Residents are offered a generous benefits package, including life and disability insurance, malpractice insurance, social security, 401-K matching, and various discounts and memberships. Additional benefits include reimbursement for moving expenses, free parking, meal coverage, paid time off days, and educational funding for presentations at conferences.

The application deadline for the upcoming season is December 1, 2023. Required application documents include ERAS Common Application Form, MSPE or Dean's Letter, medical school transcript, letters of reference, personal statement, and USMLE or COMLEX transcripts. USMLE Step 1 is required for allopathic candidates, and Step 1 and Step 2 CK must be passed before starting internship for allopathic candidates.

The program invites applicants to review their website for more information and contact them with any questions. They participate in the National Residency Matching Program and support the 2022-2023 Best Practices for the Residency Application Cycle. Interviews will be conducted virtually, and the program coordinator can be reached at 252-744-4184 for inquiries.
