STEP 220

The Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital General Surgery program is the newest accredited surgical program in New York State. The program aims to train residents to be competent, patient-centered surgeons capable of providing high-quality care. Residents will gain experience in various surgical areas, such as abdomen, breast, colorectal, and vascular surgery, among others.

The program accepts 3 categorical residents per year and 3 PGY-1 preliminary residents. It is seeking highly motivated applicants committed to clinical excellence, scholarly inquiry, and leadership.

The curriculum is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive clinical experience, surgical skills development, and a transition to senior residency. Residents rotate through different teams specializing in various surgical services. Didactics, including lectures, case presentations, and workshops, are held weekly based on the SCORE curriculum.

Residents are required to undertake a scholarly project during their training and present their findings during Grand Rounds. The program offers mentorship for scholarly activities and supports residents in research and publications.

The program application requires an updated CV, a personal statement, copies of diplomas, at least three letters of recommendation, medical school transcripts, and official test scores. Medical school graduation should be within the past three years, and a USMLE Step 2 score of 220 or higher is required.

The Faxton-St. Luke's program does not sponsor visas. Residents are responsible for obtaining their own housing, but the program provides resources for apartment rentals in the area. Residents are encouraged to explore local attractions and events in Utica, NY, and surrounding areas.
