Albany Medical Center Program

The General Surgery Residency Program at Albany Medical Center provides extensive operative experience to residents, offering training in various specialized areas, including breast, colorectal, minimally invasive, pediatric, oncologic, transplant, trauma, and vascular surgery. Residents work closely with experienced surgeons and handle a wide range of cases, ranging from open hernia repair to complex procedures like living-related renal transplants and robot-assisted gastric bypass.

Located in the only academic medical center in the Capital Region, the program serves a diverse patient population within a 150-mile radius. Graduates of the program have a strong foundation in general surgery and are well-prepared to pursue advanced surgical subspecialties or enter into private practice. The residents are highly involved in patient care and play a critical role in managing complex surgical cases.

The General Surgery Residency Program at Albany Medical College is fully accredited by the ACGME and emphasizes a well-rounded education that includes inpatient care, outpatient clinics, operative experience, and a structured didactic curriculum. The program offers opportunities for increasing autonomy, faculty mentorship, and dedicated time for didactics, education, and simulation.

Applicants to the program must meet specific qualifications, including graduation from approved medical schools in the U.S., Canada, or internationally. The application deadline is November 1st, and candidates must submit all required materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program typically offers four interview dates from late November through mid-January.
