HonorHealth Program

The HonorHealth Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program designed to train family medicine and internal medicine physicians in the specialized field of geriatric care. The fellowship aims to enhance the health and well-being of geriatric patients through individualized, high-quality care aligned with the principles of an Age-Friendly Health System, focusing on the 4Ms: medication, mentation, mobility, and what matters to the patient. Graduates are equipped to implement this framework in their practice, fulfilling a critical need for skilled geriatricians in the community.

It is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and fully prepares fellows for certification in the subspecialty of geriatric medicine. Candidates must be board-certified in family medicine or internal medicine and have completed an ACGME-accredited residency.

Curriculum and Training

The curriculum is equipped with comprehensive training experiences that include both inpatient and outpatient modalities. The core rotations consist of Geriatric Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Cardiology, Neurology, Geriatric Clinic, Inpatient Geriatric Trauma, Long-Term Care, and several elective rotations such as Wound Care, ENT, Urology, and Infectious Disease. Additionally, fellows will participate in scholarly activities including dementia simulation, journal clubs, and quality improvement projects.

Training Sites

The primary clinical site for the fellowship is HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center, supplemented by various participating sites such as HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center and Hospice of the Valley. These sites provide fellows exposure to a diverse patient population and intricate cases within geriatric care.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are engaged in scholarly activity aimed at enhancing geriatric medicine's current practices. They partake in a didactics curriculum that incorporates community peer lectures, quality improvement project presentation, and clinical conferences for continuous education and professional development.

Visa and Application Information

The HonorHealth Geriatric Medicine Fellowship participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and does not sponsor H-1B visas for international medical graduates. Eligible applicants must provide ECFMG certification, a CV that showcases their commitment to geriatric care, and proof of passing all USMLE Steps. Accepted applicants may apply for the J-1 visa, which is the only visa type sponsored by the program.
