Johns Hopkins University Program

The Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program offers a comprehensive educational experience in the subspecialties of orthopaedic surgery. With six residents accepted each year, the five-year program includes rotations at six participating hospitals, providing a broad and diverse clinical experience. The program highlights include a tight-knit, diverse, and supportive resident group, a focus on early and extensive operative experience, and strong mentorship starting from the intern year. Residents benefit from unique opportunities such as working as a team doctor for Johns Hopkins athletes, overseas outreach/mission trips, and various resident education perks such as funding for chief residents to attend the AAOA Annual Meeting. The program places a strong emphasis on research, with mentorship, publishing assistance, and dedicated research time.

Application to the residency program requires graduation from an accredited medical school, and the selection process evaluates applicants based on academic performance, research experience, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. Key application components include board scores, three recommendation letters from clinical faculty, a personal statement, dean's letters, and transcripts, with all applications submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). In-person interviews are a crucial part of the application process.

The program is recognized for its contributions towards fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education, demonstrated by winning the 2023 ACGME Barbara Ross-Lee, DO Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. As part of the curriculum, residents engage in rotations across different subspecialties and participate in extensive hands-on experience through the International Center for Orthopaedic Advancement. Additionally, there are numerous outreach and volunteer opportunities, including Operation Walk Maryland, allowing residents to contribute to global healthcare while advancing their skills.

Research plays a pivotal role in the residency experience, with residents expected to spend dedicated time on research projects and have the option to participate in the Training in Orthopaedic Team Science (TOTS) program, backed by a National Institutes of Health T32 training grant. The program supports translational research projects and prepares residents for careers in academic medicine.
