The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Psychiatry Residency Training Program offers outstanding training with a focus on multiple treatment modalities, including psychopharmacology, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and psychotherapy. With a >95% first-time psychiatry board pass rate, residents receive exposure to various psychiatric care settings such as inpatient, consultation/liaison, intensive outpatient, and residential rehab for substance use. The program emphasizes operational leadership and naval officer preparation, collaborating closely with Commands across the Eastern Seaboard and the Atlantic Ocean and civilian hospitals in the local area.

The leadership team includes distinguished fellows of psychiatric associations and is committed to residents' professional and personal development. Rotations, including inpatient psychiatry and psychiatry ER/CL, provide hands-on clinical experience. Residents have opportunities for diverse psychiatry experiences, operational psychiatry, research, and quality improvement projects. Didactics are held every Wednesday, and residents also have night float responsibilities.
