The Transitional year program offered by NYC Health & Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Program is the Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency Program. This two-year program provides comprehensive training for physicians interested in health promotion and disease prevention at the population level. Graduates of the program are eligible for Board Certification in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
The residency program combines field experience at one of the largest health departments in the U.S. with studies toward the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Residents gain epidemiologic, administrative, and clinical skills necessary to understand and prevent disease on both individual and group levels. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Application requirements for the program include having completed at least one year of clinical training in a residency program accredited by the ACGME, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Applicants must also ensure they are eligible for a full and unrestricted New York State license.
Residents appointed to full-time staff positions at the NYC Department of Health receive a salary based on the number of years of accredited postgraduate medical education completed before starting the program. Benefits include health and disability insurance, annual and sick leave, full tuition and fees for the CUNY MPH degree, and a conference travel allowance. The program also covers graduates' application and examination fees for the American Board of Preventive Medicine Certification Exam.
