Overview

The Rutgers Health Transitional Year Residency Program at Community Medical Center aims to be a leading choice for medical graduates seeking a comprehensive and supportive PGY-1 experience. The program is specifically designed to facilitate a clinical experience that enhances the development of independent clinical skills while providing robust support from faculty and senior residents. One of the distinguishing features of the program is its flexible rotation structure which can be adapted to meet the educational and personal goals of its residents. This program offers the largest number of elective blocks among Transitional Year residencies in the country, enriching the learning environment and catering to the specific interests of each resident 1.

Accepted into this ACGME accredited program are 16 positions, six of which are linked to advanced placements in other Rutgers Health PGY-2+ residency programs, including fields such as Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology. This unique structure aids residents in maintaining continuity in their training by melding their PGY-1 experience with their subsequent specialties from the outset 1.

Curriculum

The curriculum spans one year, incorporating both inpatient and outpatient settings. Residents will engage in a diverse range of rotations including:

  • 16 weeks of elective rotations
  • Inpatient Internal Medicine (8 weeks)
  • Outpatient Internal Medicine (4 weeks)
  • ICU (4 weeks)
  • Emergency Medicine (8 weeks)
  • General Surgery (4 weeks)
  • Research (2 weeks)
  • Radiology/Ultrasound (2 weeks)
  • Vacation (4 weeks)

To foster a well-rounded education, the program incorporates at least five hours of structured didactic experiences weekly, including grand rounds and case studies 7.

Research Opportunities

Engagement in research and scholarly activities is highly encouraged and all residents are expected to be involved in projects that may include quality improvement, clinical, educational, or policy initiatives. Additionally, residents will have access to a medical library and support to attend regional or national conferences 7.

Training Environment

The main training site, Community Medical Center, is a 592-bed acute care hospital that underscores quality medical education intertwined with compassionate care. The center caters to a diverse patient population, attending to over 28,000 inpatients and 127,700 outpatients annually. Being part of the RWJBarnabas Health network, residents will benefit from the interconnectedness with 14 hospitals throughout New Jersey, enhancing both the educational and clinical experiences 2.

Application Process

The program requires applications to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are selected based on well-rounded criteria beyond just standardized test scores. Required qualifications include a medical degree from an accredited institution and passing scores on the appropriate licensing exams (USMLE or COMLEX), with priority given to those with limited attempts 8. The program primarily sponsors J1 visas for foreign medical graduates; however, H1B visas are not supported 8.

Resident Benefits

In addition to enriching training opportunities, residents can expect various benefits including:

  • An annual educational allowance of $1,500
  • Travel allowance for accepted research presentations
  • Monthly meal vouchers
  • Medical, dental, and liability insurance
  • Wellness programs and educational meetings/certificates

These advantages contribute to a well-rounded residency experience focused on professional growth and personal well-being 4.

Alumni Success

The program takes pride in its alumni, many of whom have successfully matched into competitive residencies post-graduation, demonstrating the strength and effectiveness of the training and mentorship they received 3.
