NYU Long Island School of Medicine Program

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine offers a three-year Emergency Medicine Residency program beginning in 2023 at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. The program aims to educate physicians in the field of emergency medicine by providing a diverse, high-acuity patient population experience and access to advanced tertiary care services. They are a Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and STEMI Receiving Center. The curriculum includes prehospital and disaster medicine training, toxicology experience, and a comprehensive didactic curriculum on Wednesdays.

The program is led by Dr. Christopher G. Caspers, the Department of Emergency Medicine Chair, and features Dr. Alexandra L. Ortego as the Program Director, focused on graduate medical education and curriculum development. Dr. Christine DeSanno-Caridi, the Associate Program Director, emphasizes residency leadership and career longevity, while Dr. Frances Rusnack, the Assistant Program Director, focuses on medical education and resident development.

Applicants must pass USMLE Step 1 and either have taken or passed Step 2, or have passed COMLEX Level 1 and either have taken or passed Level 2. The program encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds passionate about emergency medicine. They accept six residents per year and notify interviewees starting in mid-October. Residents have diverse clinical training experiences across Long Island, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, including rotations in trauma, toxicology, and ultrasound.

The didactic curriculum includes core content lectures, workshops, grand rounds, and journal clubs. Research opportunities are available, and residents are expected to complete a scholarly project with faculty mentorship. The program also offers clinical rotation opportunities to visiting students through a subinternship elective.
