The Nephrology program at Rutgers Health/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is designed to prepare fellows for a successful career in nephrology by providing comprehensive clinical training and exposure to various facets of kidney pathology, treatment, and patient care.

Program Overview

The Division of Nephrology specializes in the management of patients with chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and other medical kidney issues. The Division emphasizes delaying the initiation of dialysis and optimizing care for those who are candidates for kidney transplantation through a robust referral system to the Kidney Transplant Program within the unit. The program is centered in New Brunswick and is associated with the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Clinical Exposure

The program offers extensive clinical training in caring for patients with acute to chronic renal failure. The facilities include a hospital-based hemodialysis unit capable of serving 60 adult and pediatric patients, as well as a large outpatient unit designed for 216 patients. The program also includes a peritoneal dialysis facility that conducts home training for approximately 130 patients using Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Continuous Cyclic Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD). This comprehensive dialysis service makes it one of the largest programs in New Jersey and among the largest in the United States.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to provide progressive responsibility in patient management and diagnostic skill development. Fellows are guided through advanced nephrology clinical training, including outpatient and inpatient rotations and specialized training in dialysis modalities. During fellowship, emphasis is placed on the management of end-stage renal disease, vascular access procedures, peritoneal dialysis technique, and kidney transplantation.
