The Stanford University Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship is a distinguished two-year program accredited by the ACGME and approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). This fellowship aims to enhance fellows’ expertise in complex oncologic surgical procedures and multidisciplinary cancer care, along with mentorship in surgical oncology research and clinical education. Established in 2020, it is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders in surgical oncology by providing robust training and a wide range of educational opportunities.

Curriculum Overview

Fellows engage in a comprehensive rotation schedule that emphasizes training in key areas such as hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB), complex upper gastrointestinal surgery, and retroperitoneal sarcoma surgery. The curriculum allocates 12 months of the fellowship to these rotations, with fellows spending 6 months immersed in these units each year. Additionally, fellows complete rotations in endocrine/melanoma (2-3 months), colorectal (1 month), and breast surgery (1 month). The program also dedicates 4 months to protected research time and rotations in medical and radiation oncology, and pathology.

Training Sites

The fellowship primarily takes place at the Stanford Health Care system, specifically housed in the New Stanford Hospital, known for its innovative approaches and advanced medical technologies. This training facility is complemented by rotations at various esteemed affiliated sites, including Kaiser Permanente and the Palo Alto Veteran's Administration Hospital, each offering unique clinical experiences ranging from trauma care to specialized surgical interventions.

Mentorship and Conferences

Attending surgeons work directly with fellows, allowing them to lead clinical teams comprising residents, interns, PAs/NPs, and medical students. The fellowship also fosters a dynamic learning environment through various teaching conferences, which feature weekly Surgical Oncology and HPB teaching sessions, along with Grand Rounds and Morbidity and Mortality conferences.

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the fellowship, candidates must have completed an accredited residency in general surgery and be qualified to sit for the American Board of Surgery examination by the fellowship start date. The fellowship accepts one fellow every other year, making it highly competitive. Applications are submitted via ERAS and require a current CV, personal statement, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, and, for international applicants, an ECFMG certificate.

Visas and Competitiveness

The Stanford Program sponsors J-1 visas for international medical graduates and may sponsor H1B visas under certain circumstances. The fellowship is competitive and particularly supportive of candidates from diverse backgrounds, including DO and IMG applicants.
