Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Program

The Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai offers a comprehensive two-year program designed for candidates who have completed an approved general surgery residency and are board-eligible or board-certified. This fellowship, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, focuses on surgical oncology training and multidisciplinary patient care. Trainees will engage in the evaluation and management of complex surgical oncology patients, work collaboratively with multidisciplinary specialists, and perform advanced oncologic procedures. Graduates of the program are well prepared for both academic careers and clinical practice.

Training & Curriculum

The fellowship entails 20 months of clinical rotations, complemented by four months dedicated to translational research. Clinical training emphasizes specialties such as gastrointestinal malignancies, breast cancer, melanoma, and more. Trainees will rotate through various disciplines including gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, and interventional radiology, gaining exposure to advanced techniques like chemo-embolization and radiofrequency ablation.

The core curriculum comprises weekly surgical grand rounds, tumor-specific meetings, and clinical research conferences. A significant aspect of the training involves presenting new patients at multidisciplinary tumor boards, allowing fellows to engage with attending physicians across various specialties to discuss comprehensive patient management strategies. During the research segment, under faculty guidance, fellows can contribute to journal publications and develop research protocols.

Application Information

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must have completed a general surgery residency at an accredited program in the United States or Canada and must possess a valid California medical license during the fellowship. Candidates who graduated from medical schools outside of these jurisdictions must have a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate. All applicants are expected to pass each step of the USMLE on their first three attempts.

Applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), with potential candidates requiring a current curriculum vitae, a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and USMLE scores. The fellowship participates in a national match program, and interviews are typically conducted in spring.
