Stanford Health Care-Sponsored Stanford University Surgical Pathology Program

The Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program at Stanford is designed to provide advanced training in surgical pathology over the course of one year. This fellowship is intended for pathologists who wish to specialize further in diagnostic surgical pathology.

Curriculum and Rotations

The program includes a range of specific rotations that are integral to the fellowship experience. These rotations cover critical areas in surgical pathology, including "hot seat" rotations for preliminary case assessments, frozen section analysis, and sign-out of consultation materials categorized by subspecialty. The fellowship also offers opportunities for junior attending time and elective rotations, allowing fellows to pursue additional training in targeted subspecialty areas such as gynecologic pathology, soft tissue pathology, breast pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, renal pathology, and more. Additionally, there is flexibility for fellows to undertake research in molecular pathology, dermatopathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, and various other disciplines related to pathology.

Fellows play an active role in departmental and interdepartmental conferences and have the chance to teach medical students and residents. Participation in night and weekend call is shared among fellows, which helps in building complete clinical competencies.

Research

The department provides considerable support for clinicopathologic and translational research initiatives, equipping fellows with resources necessary to undertake significant research projects during their tenure. Fellows are encouraged to engage in academic activities that advance their knowledge and contribute to the field.

Training Sites

The fellowship training occurs at the Stanford University Hospital and Clinics, where a broad array of cases are presented. The program provides extensive exposure to diverse pathology specimens, enhancing the training experience with real-world clinical exposure.

Visa Support and Visa Types

The program supports international fellows via ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visas, which require candidates to hold valid ECFMG certificates obtained through successful completion of the qualifying examinations (such as USMLE). Canadian graduates are specifically exempt from certain qualifying examinations for J-1 visa sponsorship. However, the program does not provide support for H-1B visas.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

This fellowship is considered highly competitive, allowing applications primarily from individuals who are board certified or eligible for certification in Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Additionally, applicants need to secure a California medical license before the fellowship commences.

Application materials include a completed CAP standardized application form with a signature, a comprehensive CV, a cover letter or personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. A photo is also required as part of the application process.

Stipends

The stipend for fellows aligns with the standard residency stipends at Stanford Health Care, reflecting the fellow's postdoctoral training level.
