The Stony Brook Medicine General Surgery Residency Program is an ACGME-approved five-year postgraduate training program aimed at providing residents with a broad range of experiences in general surgery and various surgical subspecialties. Established in 1974, the program focuses on preparing residents for successful careers as community practitioners, researchers, or academicians.
Residents at Stony Brook University Hospital have the opportunity to rotate through various surgical services, including cardiothoracic, pediatric, plastics, surgical oncology, minimally invasive & bariatrics, transplantation, trauma/burns, acute care surgery, head & neck, and vascular services. The program also emphasizes experience in surgical intensive care units to enhance residents' clinical skills.
Throughout the program, residents progress from building foundational surgical knowledge in the first two years to taking on more leadership roles in patient care and education in the third year. In the senior years (PGY-4/5), residents assume increasing responsibility in clinical care, leadership, and surgical skills development while also focusing on non-technical skills essential for a successful surgical career.
Educational Didactics, mentorship opportunities, and the flexibility for residents to pursue career development opportunities such as research or additional training are integral components of the program. Residents receive support tailored to their individual career goals, ensuring a well-rounded residency experience.
