Overview

The General Surgery Residency Program at Nassau University Medical Center, located in East Meadow, New York, offers an extensive robust training experience, facilitating a comprehensive educational journey for aspiring surgeons. This residency is part of NuHealth, encompassing a 530-bed tertiary care teaching hospital and an array of community health centers. The center hosts over 20 residency and fellowship programs, shaping the future of more than 300 medical professionals annualy. The General Surgery program admits three categorical and nine preliminary residents each year, fostering a collaborative environment enriched by multiple resident rotators from other institutions.

The program provides a wide breadth of clinical and operative experiences in various surgical disciplines, including general surgery, colorectal surgery, endoscopy, vascular and endovascular surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, trauma, and acute care surgery. The program is recognized as a Bariatric Center of Excellence and is accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Level One Trauma Center, enabling residents to participate in the care of critically injured patients in specialized units designed for surgical and trauma care. Rotational experiences also extend to cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, transplant surgery, and surgical oncology, broadening the educational horizon of trainees. The affiliation with Long Island Jewish/Forest Hills Hospital (LIJ-FH) implies that residents spend about 25% of their training in this integrated site, gaining significant technical experience.

Throughout residency, careful attention is paid to the educational development of residents. The comprehensive curriculum includes scheduled academic engagement through monthly journal clubs, biweekly tumor boards, morbidity and mortality conferences, and grand rounds. Additionally, residents are provided with hands-on training and simulation instruction, ensuring that they meet the qualifications set forth by the surgical boards. The robust academic environment also provides residents subscriptions to SCORE and TrueLearn, resources crucial for standardized test preparation.

Residents benefit from an extensive skills lab equipped with state-of-the-art simulation technology, including Simbionix (3D) Lap Mentor simulators and specialized training modules for basic skills enhancement. Focusing on early practical engagement, the program organizes an intensive boot camp for new interns covering essential surgical skills, preparation for surgeries, and other fundamental responsibilities needed to thrive in the surgical environment.

In line with contemporary residency demands, a proactive approach toward resident wellness is embedded within the program. The implemented Resident Wellness Program offers quarterly wellness half-days, support services including dog therapy sessions, meditation, and wellness retreats, all aimed at alleviating the stresses associated with residency training. Residents are encouraged to maintain a healthy work-life balance through supportive resources.

The program emphasizes a commitment to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applications from BIPOC and LGBTIQA+ communities while fostering a collaborative environment conducive to learning and improving surgical care.

Research plays a vital role in this residency. Participation in a fully funded research year is available post-PGY-2, allowing selected residents to dedicate a year to publish multiple research works and present findings at national conferences. Regardless of the requirement, all residents are expected to engage in scholarly activities and publication endeavors, contributing to advancing surgical knowledge and their professional portfolios.

Application and Requirements

The residency program is highly competitive, inviting applications exclusively from candidates who have graduated from LCME or AOA accredited medical schools within the last five years. Applicants must display academic excellence through USMLE scores that meet or exceed 230 for Step 1 and 240 for Step 2, or equivalent COMLEX scores. Additional necessary documents include a completed ERAS application, letters of recommendation, and clinical experience in a U.S. teaching hospital.

The program is known to sponsor J-1 visas, thus providing necessary support for international medical graduates seeking training opportunities.

Training Environment and Competitiveness

Encouraging a learning environment filled with integrated experiences, the program sustains a high standard of education through a dedicated faculty of board-certified surgeons across various specialties. The curriculum emphasizes both clinical and operative autonomy that evolves progressively throughout the five-year training, setting a benchmark for cultivating skilled clinicians poised for a future in surgical practice.
