The University of Alabama at Birmingham offers a combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics residency program. This is a 4-year program that integrates training in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics, leading to board eligibility in both disciplines. The program is designed for graduating medical students committed to a career in academic medicine. It provides training in clinical skills, teaching, and research in both Medical Genetics and Pediatrics.

In the combined program, residents receive rigorous training in Pediatrics to care for infants, children, and adolescents. The Pediatrics training closely resembles that of categorical Pediatric residents, with the primary difference being that combined residents spend 30 months in Pediatrics training. The program integrates medical genetics training in years 2 through 4, with clinical experiences in every aspect of modern medical genetics, including pediatric, prenatal, and adult-onset genetic diseases, as well as diagnostic genetics laboratories.
