The Combined Pediatrics Medical Genetics Residency Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is a four-year combined pediatrics/medical genetics training program designed to train future academic leaders in medical genetics. Clinical training primarily takes place at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital and Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Residents in this program have the opportunity to gain experience in clinical genetics, biochemical genetics, cytogenetics, and molecular genetics. The curriculum includes rotations in various areas such as Undiagnosed Disease Program, Cancer, Prenatal, Newborn Screening, Inpatient and Outpatient Genetics/Metabolism, Laboratory Rotations, and various Subspecialty Clinics.

In the fourth year, residents focus entirely on genetics with opportunities for research and professional development. Residents are encouraged to participate in research projects and present their work at regional and national meetings. The program also offers weekly educational sessions and structured courses in genetics to enhance training and preparation for board exams.

The application process includes submitting a CV, three letters of reference, USMLE scores, a copy of the medical school transcript, and a personal statement. Applications are accepted via ERAS starting in September one year prior to the start date. Promising applicants will be invited for a virtual interview conducted in the fall.

For further information on the program or the application process, potential applicants can reach out to the Program Coordinator, Samantha Kisiel, at [email protected].

Overall, the Vanderbilt Combined Pediatrics Medical Genetics Residency Program offers a comprehensive training experience for those interested in pursuing careers in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics.
