Program Overview

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) is a highly specialized program designed for fourth-year fellows. The training focuses on catheter-based interventions, imparting the necessary skills for understanding indications, contraindications, risks, and complications associated with various cardiovascular procedures. As part of their comprehensive training, fellows are expected to complete a minimum of 250 coronary interventions within the span of the year, alongside numerous peripheral vascular, valvular, and adult structural heart procedures 1.

The curriculum encompasses practical skills such as performing and interpreting coronary angiograms, hemodynamics, and advanced techniques like intravascular ultrasound and pressure monitoring. Additionally, the fellowship includes a post-procedure ambulatory clinic aimed at long-term patient outcomes and risk factor modification for those who have undergone interventions 1.

Active participation in clinical trials is a core aspect of the fellowship. Application Requirements

To be eligible for application, candidates must have completed residency training in internal medicine and hold board-certification or board-eligibility in the same. Additionally, a California medical license is required before the fellowship starts. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens or meet residency or visa requirements prior to the fellowship. Notably, the program does not accept H1B visas at this time 1.

Required application materials include a current curriculum vitae, a one-page personal statement, USMLE scores, a current photo, a dean's letter, and at least three letters of recommendation, with at least one from a current or past program director. Applications are processed exclusively through ERAS 1.

Salary and Benefits

The program offers competitive salary and benefits as aligned with the UCI Resident/Fellow Union policies. Fellows can expect reimbursement for educational and conference expenses, two provided white coats, and monthly cafeteria credits. There are provisions for moonlighting; however, interventional fellows may only moonlight on weekends and within a limit of 40 hours per month. Time spent moonlighting is counted toward the 80-hour work week limit 1.
