University of California (San Diego) Medical Center Program

The Cytopathology Fellowship Program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center is a one-year, ACGME-accredited training program designed to offer advanced education in diagnostic cytopathology. The primary focus is to equip fellows with comprehensive knowledge and experience in interpreting fine needle aspiration biopsies, gynecologic (GYN) and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, and the application of various ancillary studies such as immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostics.

A significant aspect of the training includes correlating cytologic specimens with surgical pathology findings, enhancing the diagnostic accuracy and understanding of underlying pathologies. The fellowship emphasizes direct experience, where fellows are trained to perform fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies through both palpation and ultrasound guidance.

Training and Responsibilities

During the fellowship year, fellows will engage in various responsibilities, including conducting a quality control research study, which is a requirement for program completion. Additionally, fellows are encouraged to participate in resident teaching, reinforcing both their own knowledge and the educational experience of pathology residents.

The UCSD Medical Center Cytopathology Laboratory processes approximately 27,059 specimens each year, which includes around 9,705 non-gynecologic specimens. The laboratory also leads a pathology-based FNA service supported by cytopathologist-staffed clinics and performs or assists with the majority of superficial and deep fine needle aspirations, totaling approximately 1,414 procedures annually.

Application Requirements

Applicants interested in the Cytopathology Fellowship must be either board-eligible or board-certified in anatomic pathology or combined anatomic/pathology and clinical pathology (AP/CP), alongside having successfully completed USMLE Step III.
