The program is developmental in nature, aiming to challenge residents appropriately at each level to ensure they become autonomous, confident, skilled, and experienced clinicians by graduation.

The program's primary objective is to train academically knowledgeable, clinically astute, and caring psychiatrists. Residents gain experience in various areas of psychiatry including inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, geriatric, community, forensic, addiction, child/adolescent psychiatry, and mental health primary care. The program integrates biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors in training residents to utilize current methods of interventions effectively.

Throughout the program, residents are supervised closely in their clinical work, and they participate in comprehensive didactic seminars, case conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs, and a mentorship program. The program places a strong emphasis on patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

Upon completion of the General Psychiatry Residency Program at UCSD, residents are expected to be competent in psychiatric diagnosis and evidence-based treatment. The Department of Psychiatry at UCSD prides itself on providing residents with a compelling and challenging educational experience.
