The UC San Diego Family Medicine Residency Program is an urban academic program uniquely designed to blend rigorous training within a university health system alongside a strong commitment to community service. This program develops leaders in family medicine through a focus on excellence in patient care, evidence-based practices, and leadership skills, preparing its graduates for the challenges of modern healthcare delivery.

This program offers outstanding faculty, a diverse patient population, and numerous opportunities for residents to engage in research and pursue personal interests, helping to cultivate a holistic approach to medical education.

1

Application Requirements

To apply for the UC San Diego Family Medicine Residency Program, candidates must meet specific requirements, which include:

  • A complete application submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
  • Official Transcript
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Dean's letter
  • Photo
  • USMLE and/or COMLEX scores
  • Three letters of recommendation from medical school faculty or clinical supervisors

For graduates from foreign medical schools, additional documentation is required, including ECFMG Certification and a Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter from the Medical Board of California. Furthermore, all applicants are mandated to have clinical experience within the last three years; research experience alone is inadequate.

Applicants should be cognizant that the program has limited positions available and only accepts applications for eight categorical positions matched through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). The application deadline is typically November 1.

2

Curriculum Structure

The residency program at UC San Diego features a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes both didactic learning and hands-on clinical experience. Didactic sessions are held weekly every Wednesday and include lectures from family medicine faculty as well as interdisciplinary specialists, thereby ensuring well-rounded training.

Residents participate in various clinical rotations, which are designed to provide in-depth exposure to different patient demographics and medical conditions. Notably, the curriculum includes opportunities to engage in community medicine, particularly through rotations at local high schools, community clinics, and specialized facilities such as those serving asylum seekers.

Special Areas of Concentration

The UC San Diego Family Medicine Residency offers several areas of concentration for residents to hone their expertise:

  • Sports Medicine: This concentration provides residents with the opportunity to engage in sports events at various levels, learning essential skills in athletic medicine.
  • Integrative Medicine: Partnering with the UC San Diego Center for Integrative Medicine allows residents to explore holistic approaches and treatments within family medicine.
  • Lifestyle Medicine: This area focuses on using therapeutic lifestyle changes to treat chronic conditions, providing a pathway to certification in lifestyle medicine.
  • Advanced Procedures: Residents can pursue advanced training in a variety of technical procedures, enhancing their competence in key areas relevant to family medicine practice.

This individualized approach fosters a rich educational environment where residents can pursue specialized interests while gaining a broad base of clinical skills.

4

Diversity and Wellness Initiatives

Recognizing the importance of resident well-being, the program implements multiple wellness initiatives and fosters a supportive atmosphere among residents. The Resident Advisory Committee (RAC) serves as a platform for residents to voice concerns and share experiences, ensuring that their feedback plays a crucial role in shaping the residency environment.

The program also encourages a commitment to diversity and anti-racism by implementing efforts to reduce health disparities and enhance inclusion within the residency.

5

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The UC San Diego Family Medicine Residency Program offers visa sponsorship primarily for J-1 visas for international medical graduates (IMGs). The program promotes a welcoming environment for diverse backgrounds, including those from DO and IMG pathways, contributing to its competitiveness.

Applicants should be aware that while the program is open to IMGs, a strong clinical experience in the United States is essential, thereby ensuring applicants possess a solid foundation for the residency's demands.

6

Training Sites

Residents rotate through various clinical settings in San Diego, including UCSD Hospital campuses in Hillcrest and La Jolla, the San Diego VA Hospital, and Rady Children’s Hospital. This exposure enables residents to learn within different healthcare systems, enhancing their adaptability and proficiency in diverse clinical scenarios.

The program emphasizes continuity of care, with residents developing a panel of continuity patients during their training, fostering a personalized approach to health care.
