University of California (San Diego) Medical Center Program
Overview
The UC San Diego Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the field of otolaryngology. With an emphasis on apprenticeship learning, early surgical opportunities, and cutting-edge technology, the program offers a comprehensive six-year training structure that includes five years of clinical training along with one year dedicated to research.
This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and provides a robust curriculum that prepares residents through a diverse range of clinical and surgical experiences. The first year, referred to as PGY-1, consists of multiple rotations in both surgical specialties and direct otolaryngology training, with six months spent on otolaryngology and rotations in neurosurgery, surgical intensive care, plastic surgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and neuroradiology/pathology.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is methodically structured across the residency years with a focus on developing clinical acumen and surgical proficiency:
- PGY-1: Involves foundational rotations and significant exposure to clinical care.
- PGY-2 to PGY-6: Residents progressively take on increased responsibilities involving the total care of patients across all otolaryngology subspecialties.
- Research Year: Two incoming PGY-1 residents are granted protected research time where they can engage in clinically-based or basic science research with funding opportunities.
Residents are also required to engage in various conferences and didactic sessions which further solidify their medical knowledge and practical skills.

This diversity in training sites allows for exposure to a wide variety of patient populations and clinical scenarios.
1Conferences and Educational Opportunities
