Family Health Centers of San Diego Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Family Health Centers of San Diego aims to recruit and train physicians from diverse backgrounds to provide high-quality medical care to underserved communities. Established in 2014, this program is rooted in the City Heights neighborhood, one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the nation, catering to a large population of refugees and immigrants.

City Heights Family Health Center serves as the continuity clinic for residents and sees approximately 86,000 patients annually. The clinic is recognized as a Joint Commission Primary Care Medical Home and enjoys NCQA Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home recognition. The program focuses on understanding the social determinants of health, leading to improved patient outcomes in underserved populations. With a core curriculum primarily housed within the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), the program is aligned with one of the top ten largest FQHCs in the country.

Each year, FHCSD provides health care services to over 227,000 patients, the majority of whom are low-income and uninsured. The organization operates 77 sites across San Diego County, encompassing a variety of health services including primary care, behavioral health, dental, and vision services. Collaborations exist with recognized hospitals in the area, including Scripps Mercy Hospital, Sharp Grossmont Hospital, Rady Children's Hospital, and UC San Diego Medical Center, offering a rich breadth of clinical experiences across different specialties.

Curriculum and Training

The Family Medicine Residency Program integrates various curriculum tracks tailored to special populations and interests. This includes an HIV track that provides a longitudinal experience in HIV care, preparing residents for board certification in HIV medicine upon completion. The global health concentration focuses on aiding refugees, while the sports medicine track allows residents to participate in clinics and national conferences. The integrative medicine track complements traditional medical training with holistic practices.

Residents also benefit from an innovative curriculum covering trauma-informed care, gender-affirming care, and medication-assisted treatment. The City Heights clinic showcases an Osteopathic Manipulation Treatment (OMT) clinic that is directed by DO faculty, allowing all residents to gain expertise in OMT.

Research Opportunities

The program emphasizes research involvement, encouraging residents to engage in projects that align with their interests, particularly in areas addressing health disparities and community medicine. Faculty support is readily available to facilitate scholarly activities and presentations.

Application Process and Requirements

The program offers seven categorical positions and requires applicants to submit through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). The application packet must include a dean’s letter, a personal statement, CV, official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation, with at least one from a family medicine physician. Additionally, graduates from foreign medical schools must present ECFMG certification as part of their application.

All applicants must have graduated within the last two years and completed at least one year of clinical experience in the U.S. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and virtual interviews are conducted from November to mid-January.

Visa Sponsorship and Competitiveness

The Family Medicine Residency Program at FHCSD does not currently sponsor visa applications, thereby limiting applications to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The program is highly competitive with an emphasis on diversity and commitment to serving underserved populations.
