Overview of the Program

The Kaiser Permanente San Diego Emergency Medicine Residency Program stands as a pioneering training program within the Kaiser Permanente framework, recognized as the first of its kind in the country. Curriculum Structure

PGY-1

During the first year, residents gain a foundational understanding necessary for emergency medicine practice, with rotations across various specialties such as Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Critical Care Medicine, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. A significant portion of this year is spent in the Emergency Department (ED), where residents acquire fundamental emergency medicine skills.

PGY-2

The second-year curriculum focuses on the stabilization of critically ill patients while allowing residents to assume leadership roles within the ED. Residents engage in trauma critical care and pediatric intensive care, enhancing their confidence in managing severely ill patients. They also participate in an innovative ED administration curriculum to grasp the complexities of emergency medicine in relation to the healthcare system.

PGY-3

The third year promotes increased autonomy for residents, fostering a more supervisory role in patient care management. This year culminates with the completion of scholarly projects, encouraging residents to present their findings at national conferences.

Training Sites

The program boasts diverse training locations that enable residents to navigate various healthcare systems effectively. Rotations occur in urgent care settings, county facilities, and at fully integrated healthcare systems. Key affiliate institutions include:

• Scripps Mercy Hospital: A Level 1 Trauma Center with high-acuity cases and unique learning experiences, particularly concerning cross-border traumas from Mexico.
• TriCity Medical Center: Serving as a Level 3 Trauma Center, this location gives residents exposure to underserved populations, with an emphasis on comprehensive patient care.
• Rady Children’s Hospital: This dedicated pediatric hospital allows residents to gain experience in pediatric emergency medicine, managing various degrees of acuity.

Research and Scholarly Activity

The program promotes scholarly activities aimed at developing critical thinking and research skills among residents. During their training, residents engage in research initiatives and have opportunities to contribute to publications, enhancing their understanding of evidence-based practices.

Competitive Application Process

The residency program is characterized as highly competitive, making it essential for applicants to demonstrate strong academic credentials. Special application requirements may include a maximum of one failed STEP exam, and typically, candidates should have graduated within a specified timeframe from medical school.
