The program provides comprehensive training utilizing the combined resources of UConn Health and three other affiliated institutions, ensuring exposure to a large clinical volume in inner city and suburban settings. Residents also have dedicated research time and benefit from a culture of inclusivity.
Application requirements include graduation from an AOA, accredited allopathic, or osteopathic medical school, with medical school graduation within five years of residency application. Other requirements include the ERAS application, dean’s letter, medical school transcript, three letters of reference, CV, USMLE transcript (Step 1 and Step 2 passed prior to application), personal statement, and photo. The program supports J1 visas only.
The program conducts virtual interviews and ranks applicants based on various criteria such as medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, interview performance, and scholarly activities. They receive approximately 400 applications annually and interview 40 applicants for the available positions, which are 2 or 3 per year.
Residents are involved in research activities during two, three-month periods in their PGY3 and PGY4 years. The research rotation aims to empower residents with skills in research design, analysis, and utilization of resources. Residents are expected to present their research proposals and findings at didactic conferences.
The Otolaryngology program at the University of Connecticut provides a robust training environment with opportunities for clinical exposure, research involvement, and a strong focus on resident well-being and education. Dr. Kourosh Parham serves as the Residency Program Director.
