Program Overview

The University of Louisville offers a comprehensive Plastic Surgery Residency program that features both independent and integrated models. The independent program spans three years and follows a prerequisite five years of general surgery training, while the integrated model lasts six years with a strong focus on general surgery during the first three years. Both programs maintain ACGME accreditation and aim to furnish residents with a thorough understanding of both basic and advanced principles within the field of Plastic Surgery. The program's mission revolves around cultivating plastic surgeons who are conscientious, compassionate, and competent, equipping them for the various challenges in their professional journeys.

Residents engage in rotations at various healthcare facilities including University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Norton Hospital, Norton Children’s Hospital, Jewish South Hospital, Mary Elizabeth Hospital, and Louisville VA Hospital. This exposure encompasses all facets of plastic surgery such as aesthetics, facial trauma, burns, pediatric plastic surgery, general reconstruction, craniofacial, and hand upper extremity. Additional rotations in oculoplastic, orthopedics, dermatology, maxillofacial, and ENT are also compulsory, enriching the educational breadth of the program.

Academic Structure

The academic component of the program is extensive, featuring an inclusive conference schedule that encompasses 350 conferences annually and weekly grand rounds addressing over 50 core topics. Weekly conferences cover various subjects such as indications, in-service quiz reviews, hand case reviews, Moh’s surgery, craniofacial syndromes, and more. Each resident is expected to engage in a research project that must be completed, presented, and published, emphasizing the commitment to scholarly activity and learning. Attendance at these conferences is mandatory, highlighting the program’s dedication to academics over service.

Residents consistently perform well on the in-service exam, which prepares them for the written exams of the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). With a profound focus on academic excellence, the graduates of this program have maintained impressive performance on both the oral and written components of board certification.

Application and Interview Process

Applications for the Integrated model are submitted through the Plastic Surgery Central Application (PSCA), while the Independent model requires participation in the SFMatch. In-person interviews occur at distinct times, with December and January being designated for the integrated model and March for the independent model. The application process and interviews are structured to evaluate candidates' qualifications and fit within the framework of the program.

Residency Benefits

The program also offers a competitive stipend package which includes life, health, and dental insurance, along with various additional benefits such as disability insurance, malpractice coverage, and campus health services. Residents are provided a structured environment ensuring coverage for potential work-related injuries as well. The stipend rates for residents are competitive, reflecting the program's commitment to supporting trainees throughout their education.

Residents generally receive four weeks of vacation per year, which can be adapted to fit personal and educational needs. Furthermore, other perks include library privileges, lab coats, and opportunities for reduced-price tickets to athletic events.

Visa Support and International Candidates

The program welcomes international medical graduates (IMGs) and provides specific visa sponsorship options to accommodate their participation in the residency. Common visa types that the program can sponsor include J-1 and H-1B visas, allowing IMGs to pursue their training without facing obstacles related to immigration.

Competitiveness and Special Requirements

Admission to the program is highly competitive, with a focus on both traditional MD and DO candidates. The program is receptive to IMGs and has shown a history of supporting applicants who meet their stringent academic criteria. Certain application requirements exist, including having completed clinical rotations in the United States and a limited number of failed STEP exams, which reflects the program’s commitment to maintaining high standards among its trainees.
