The University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine offers an Interventional Radiology Independent Residency program, which is accredited by the ACGME. Program Structure and Curriculum

The residency program typically accommodates two independent positions each year. The core training sites include Tampa General Hospital, Moffitt Cancer Center, and Bay Pines VA Medical Center, which together provide a comprehensive experience. Tampa General Hospital is a 1041-bed Level 1 trauma center, fully equipped with 43 surgical suites and 7 interventional suites, making it a cornerstone for interventional radiology training.

In this residency, the full spectrum of interventional radiology is practiced, including but not limited to:

• Liver interventions (e.g., TIPS, TACE)
• Complex venous interventions (e.g., IVC filter retrieval, angiosome-directed procedures)
• Arteriovenous malformation treatments
• Endovascular treatments for PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease)
• Interventional oncology procedures at Moffitt Cancer Center
• Procedures at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center including endovascular and body interventions

This extensive training encompasses both clinical evaluation and procedural skills development, essential for a competent interventional radiologist.

Research Opportunities

Research is an integral component of the residency program, and residents are expected to engage in at least one research study during their training. Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency program at USF is competitive, with a preference for applicants who have strong USMLE scores, particularly those who have achieved a passing score on USMLE Step 1 before application. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and DOs are welcome to apply; however, applicants must provide evidence of ECFMG certification, a valid visa (J1 or equivalent), and one year of clinical training in an ACGME accredited program. Interviews are held from December through February for independent residency candidates.
