University of Utah Health Program

The University of Utah Health Program offers a comprehensive four-year Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency. This training program is structured to equip physicians with competency in both pediatrics and internal medicine, creating a group of clinicians competent in adult and childhood diseases.

The program alternates blocks between internal medicine and pediatrics, providing experiences in a variety of settings to facilitate a cohesive education. Residents have continuity clinics at combined med-peds clinics that serve a largely underserved and refugee population on the west side of Salt Lake City.

The program focuses on educating primary care practitioners in Med-Peds and preparing graduates for fellowship training in pediatrics or adult medicine. They emphasize diversity, equity, and inclusion, resident wellness, outstanding clinical training, and research, education, and leadership opportunities.

The residency program follows an X+Y ambulatory schedule for interns and incorporates both internal medicine and pediatric outpatient and inpatient rotations to provide a balanced educational experience.

Residents are encouraged to participate in various scholarly and global health experiences. The program supports individual needs and career goals by offering flexibility in scheduling, elective development, and research opportunities.

The facility offers a rural pathway program for residents interested in rural and underserved health care, training at academic medical centers and rural sites and focusing on complex chronic diseases, transitions of care, and telehealth.

To apply, interested applicants need to submit their applications through the National Resident Matching Program's Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS). Application requirements include the common ERAS application form, CV, personal statement, medical school transcript, USMLE Step scores, Medical School Performance Evaluation, and three letters of recommendation.

The program is recognized for its exceptional training and has a successful track record preparing graduates for various career paths in primary care, fellowships, and academic hospitalist work. Residents have opportunities for leadership, research, and advocacy work throughout the program duration.
